Yesterday we went to the last day of the Texas State Fair. It was such a nice day out too. Upper 70’s maybe 80-81 but it was really nice. Last year we didn’t go to the fair since I have Celiac disease it make it rather difficult to eat any of the fair foods. I mean isn’t that the reason you really go to the state fair, to eat and eat fried fatty foods? I know it used to be my reason. Corn Dogs, funnel cakes, and belgium waffles, yummy.
So yesterday we really wanted to go. My wife is a teacher and they get a free ticket so we decided since it was the last day lets just go out there for a few hours. Glad we did, as I said before it was a really nice day and by the time we left around 4ish, the crowds were still not that bad for being a Sunday.
Overall we had a really fun time and did a couple things we have not done at the fair in years past. Here are a couple of pictures that I took.
The 2008 Red River Rivalry. (I still like Red River Shootout better)
Game takes place tomorrow in Dallas @ the Cotton Bowl around 11am cst.
Of course most will know that I will be cheering for Oklahoma and they better win and keep their #1 ranking in the country. However, I do believe they will win tomorrow and go on to the National Championship this year…
Last Friday night my good friend invited me to Texas A&M Coaches Night in Dallas at Fair Park. Now for those who don’t know me too well, I’m really an Oklahoma Sooners fan, but on occassion I will go to Texas A&M events with my good friend. When we got there, people were just pouring in. I didn’t think that this event would really be as big as it was. I think the count hit about 1800. They had some good food, although I could only eat some of the sliced beef without the sauce, but it was still good.
We ate and then we checked out the silent auction. This is where we got into trouble.
Let me give you a background on this trouble. Last year both of our wives went to an auction and ended up spending $600 ($300 each) on a bunch of items, so they warned us not to do any auction things. We laughed! So of course while we were walking around we saw a couple cool things to put a silent bid down on.
Then the party started and we listened to some speeches from people, and a retired coach and then this years new coach, Mike Sherman. He carried on a little too much but not all that bad. Once the talks were over we had 15 minutes to check out the auction items and get our final write in bids before time expired. Uh OH! The auction ended and we ended up winning both the items.. lol I don’t think the wives will be too happy.
So you ask what did we win?
First before I get to that, I made a little side bet with my friend. I told him after the initial offer that if we won this prize I would actually go out and buy a Texas A&M polo shirt and wear it to this event, if we won!
Well let me tell you that I need to start shopping.
Our first item we won was a suite at Lone Star Park (Horse Racing) for up to 25 people. YEAH! This will be really fun and it’s something that both our families enjoy.
Second prize (What I am buying the shirt for) Round trip charter airfare, and 2 tickets to the Iowa State Football game in October. WOW.. This will be so much fun.!! I’m actually pretty excited about this. I’m not sure on the details of this one yet, but I would assume we would fly up, head to the game and then fly home the same day.
So overall Friday night was pretty fun and the auction was for a good cause.
DFW Airport:
This poor guy who was driving a service van lost consciousness and ran into a Boeing 717 yesterday. The driver was taken to a Fort Worth hospital. At the time the plane was boarding for a flight to Milwaukee. The flight was canceled.
Dallas:
This 49-year-old woman is in custody accused of beating a 93-year-old neighbor. What was she thinking. Come on now, beating a 93-year-old, yeah she must be in the winner of the year club. They found her laying in a pool of blood, and remains hospitalized in serious condition. They think she might have been beaten with a hammer and other household utensils.
Forth Worth:
A 39-year-old woman and her 15-year-old son were arrested in connection with a fatal stabbing of a man last weekend. Hall who was 52 was over visiting and got in an argument and the 15-year-old got involved and now William Hall is dead. Come on, when there is a problem do you really have to kill everyone. By now I would think that people know if you kill someone you go to prison for a very long time if not life!
Dallas:
Now check this out. This guy decided to speed, and of course he lost control of his car, jumped a curb and plowed over 4 people on a sidewalk. They gave the driver a sobriety test to see if he was drunk and he passed so no drinking and driving there. 2 men are in critical condidtion, 1 woman in serious condition, and the child’s status was unknown.
* most of there stories were obtained from local news stories *
So Monday I took my little brother (Big Brothers, Big Sisters) to the Zoo. I haven’t been in a couple of years and they have been advertising that they now had penguins again and this new exhibit for them. Lets just say that I wasn’t really impressed. It was cool to see the penguins but it is really nothing like the penguins exhibit at the Dallas World Aquarium.
Ok so we got to see some really cool animals. That’s one reason I like to go to the zoo. Of course some of the animals just like to sit or sleep. Then again it was close to 93 out. The coyotes and the mountain lions were all taking morning naps. The Elephants were pretty active. The Hippos barely came out of the water. (I wonder how long they can hold there breath) The Apes and Monkeys are always fun to watch.
Overall it was hot and humid but a fun day none the less..
Early this morning I heard a heart crushing story. Christian music artist Steven Curtis Chapman lost his 5 year old daughter in an accident. The sad news is that the driver of the SUV was her teenage brother in their own driveway. They have not released his name, but I can’t imagine the feeling. It is so sad.
And the strange part.. East Dallas the other night, there was a similar accident. The mother went out to the store at night, so dad took his 2 kids out side and they laid down in the driveway to look at the stars. Well dad feel asleep and did not hear his wife approaching and she just came up in the driveway and ran over their 2 year old child who died.
It’s just sad and crazy. 2 accidental run-overs by family members within 2 days.
Just going to do an quick little shorts on a few topics going on around the Dallas, Fort Worth area.
Stars:
The Dallas Stars lost game 1 last night against the Detroit Red Wings (in Detroit) 1-4. Game 2 will take place Saturday night (again in Detroit). Hopefully the Stars will look like they are ready to play that game, cause honestly last night they didn’t look so good. And if they don’t start playing better, this will be a short series for the Red Wings and the Stars, well I guess there is next year, AGAIN!
Rangers:
The Rangers beat my old home town team (Seattle Mariners) last night 5-0 (At least one team from DFW Pro Sports won last night). But it looked more like a hockey match. The Rangers pitcher lofted a pitch that the batter thought was too high (It didn’t hit him) and he decided to clear the benches and go after the pitcher. Nice Sexson, really nice.
Robbery in Fort Worth:
Early this morning a woman was attacked by a 44 year old man at a doughnut shop and started to beat her in the head while she was trying to escape. A neighbor heard the attack in progress, and went and grabbed his shotgun and shot the guy in the chest.
:: Check Mark :: 1 more criminal off of the streets
She Cried Rape and He died (Follow UP):
A Woman who cried rape who was convicted on manslaughter charges was freed yesterday after 1 week in jail on an appeal bond. Yep $25K and she is free probably for at least 1 year. This story is crazy. Husband came home and his wife was taking care of business in her lovers car in the driveway and when the husband came home, she started yelling rape, so husband grabs gun and delivers a lethal blow killing this guy. Wife lied about it and they let him go with no charges and decided to charge her instead. Last week she was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
And Finally GAS Prices = Outrageous:
Yesterday one location in the South Arlington area posted up the following prices.
3.65 for Regular, 3.78 middle, 3.96 for premium. This is crazy for the DFW area. And I know people will say, “It’s way more expensive where I live” I’m sure it is, but for this area, it’s crazy.
I heard Louie Speak at Passion Dallas a couple months ago when I volunteered my weekend to help out with this event. It was an amazing time even though I didn’t hear every talk but what I did hear was amazing. This is one of those small parts of one of his speeches that you should listen to.
OK so your up late and want to get a bite to eat already.. So you drive down or to your local Taco Bell, and decide yep TB it is and you get in the drive through lane.. Right?
So while your deciding what you want the car in front you of is taking way too long, so what do you do? Your hungry right and don’t want to wait? Check out what this person decided to do last night…
blurb: Shortly after midnight, a couple in a Jeep Cherokee were waiting behind the teens at the restaurant near the 3200 block of Old Mill Road. “The suspect gets a little upset at the amount of time it’s taking to make the order in the drive-through,” Dallas police Lt. Sally Lannom said. “So they start honking horns at each other.”
The driver of the Jeep followed the teens across the street where they had parked to eat, police said. At some point, the Jeep struck the teens’ pickup, and people from both vehicles got out and began to fight.
Police said the Jeep’s driver, who is about 19 years old, pulled out a knife and stabbed 17-year-old Keesean Walker in the chest and 18-year-old Dionta Williams in the arm.
After I left the Dallas, Fort Worth area for Seattle on last Wed., The metroplex took a beating. Various tornado warned storms ripped through the area. First of all our house did not have any damage (thank goodness) however our friends down in Alvarado did not escape entirely.
Here are a couple of pictures they took and emailed me. It’s pretty wild how the sign is actually under the car. In addition to these pictures they lost both of the storage sheds. There neighbors however lost all their windows.
